Highlights: July 2022

July wasn’t filled with loads of trips out really there were some highlights, and the chances I had to get out were pretty good. The highlights included some for my personal work, and I have also spoken about some of my day job as well, I feel it’s worthy of being included.

The month included a few different trips out. One to shingle street again, that was pretty fruitful. A trip to visit land guard point, gave a few different images, because of the changing conditions. And I got back out to Iken to the edge of the River Alde, with some nice light and heavier high clouds that led to some interesting compositions.

A huge highlight was, the chance to get in and around my uncle’s beehives again. I  helped to take the honey-laden frames off and photographed the process at the same time. And we spun out the honey and then jar it up as well.

I’m also going to give a little insight into what I’ve been doing in my day-to-day work. With the inclusion of some food photography.

Shingle Street

It’s one of those places, where you always come away with something. I went at sunrise and captured the honey pot shot of the bungalow near the lagoon. Taking some time to start to capture that, as there was a lovely pastel sky above us. Then moving my lens towards the shingle spit that juts out into the sea.

Working on another composition similar to one I took in June, but this was just as the sun was rising. I used the shape of the shingle to draw the eye in. While that shot was being taken, I looked to how I could include the coastguard cottages in the other direction. I used the same spit but only the first third and took a long exposure to the waves rising.

Landguard Point

I hadn’t been to Landguard Point since January so it was nice to get back. As usual, the main focus was to get around the jetty and explore the possibilities of compositions. I spent some time exploring an old composition I capture a few years back with the walkway, the reserve and the cranes in the background. On this occasion, it didn’t quite work out so never really made it past Lightroom.

Then I spent some time looking towards where the sun was rising. I love images where you capture the waves as they crash on the shoreline. This was one shot I like to back to when I’m here. I then turned my camera towards the jetty. Lining my shot up so it was more horizontal along the frame. It’s a composition, I’ve wondered whether it would be worth trying.

Iken

Every time I visit, I always remember why I want to go back to Iken. It’s such a peaceful and tranquil spot. There have been so many times when I stepped out of my car and there hasn’t been another soul in sight.

On this occasion, another person was milling about. But that didn’t stop me from capturing the sunrise. It was a pretty good sunrise, one that held two halves, because of the cloud cover. It started as a pink pastel toned, lighting the whole of the sky. That then led to the light moving under a heavier high cloud. I took myself towards the church and aimed my camera towards the church on the horizon.

I used that as a part of many of my compositions, but as I worked my way up. Also found myself using the boats that adorned the river as mid and foreground interest.

A Huge Highlight: Bee Hives!

So yes I got the chance to capture some images of the hives. I hadn’t been in and around a hive for around two years. The last time was in 2020. Getting all suited up and then got to the hives. I aimed to help with the process of getting the frames out of the hives, the photography came second. I have created a study of this in the past, and I will in the long run reinstate that page with a new photo essay included. But here are a few images of the process, and one of me all suited up.

The Crown – Food Photography

In my day job, we’ve been on a bit of a mission to get one of our restaurants relaunched. With a new head chef, menu and food on offer. The task was to get it back on the food map. So within 4 weeks, we designed new menus, undertook 3 photoshoots and were involved in a video shoot. We have a photographic style for The Crown that I’ve developed further in the last year or so. It’s been a lot of work in a short period of time, but certainly will be one of the highlights I look back on.  Here are a few of the images I took for the promotion of the new menu!
